    Periodontics (Gum Disease Treatment)

Gum disease diagnosis and treatment from a board-certified periodontist in San Bernardino.

    Periodontics (Gum Disease Treatment)

Healthy gums hold your teeth in place. When gum disease sets in, it does not just affect your smile — it can lead to bone loss, tooth loosening, and even missing teeth. At Monteluz Dental Specialty Group, our San Bernardino periodontist diagnoses and treats every stage of gum disease, from early gingivitis to advanced periodontitis requiring surgery. We also prepare and maintain the gum and bone tissue that supports dental implants, working directly with our oral surgery and restorative teams in the same office so your care stays coordinated from start to finish. Denti-Cal and most PPO plans are accepted. If your gums bleed when you brush or you have been told you need a deep cleaning, call (909) 567-2024. Same-week appointments are often available.

    What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is the dental specialty focused on the gums, jawbone, and ligaments that anchor your teeth. A periodontist is trained to diagnose gum disease, perform deep cleanings and surgical procedures, and manage the health of the tissues that surround dental implants. At Monteluz, our periodontist works alongside our oral surgeons and restorative dentists in the same San Bernardino office, which means bone grafting, implant planning, and gum maintenance can be handled without sending you to another facility.

    Types of Gum Disease

Gingivitis is the earliest stage. Gums may look red, feel puffy, and bleed when you floss. It is reversible with a professional cleaning and better home care. If it is left untreated, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis. The infection slips below the gumline, destroying the bone that holds your teeth. Teeth loosen, shift, or develop deep pockets that trap bacteria. Advanced periodontitis is the most severe form. At this point, significant bone and tissue loss has occurred, and teeth may need to be removed before the damage spreads further.

    Our Periodontic Services

Scaling and Root Planing — This is a deep cleaning that reaches below the gumline. We remove hardened plaque and tartar from the root surfaces, then smooth those surfaces so the gums can reattach and heal. Most patients with early to moderate gum disease respond well to this treatment. Gum Grafting — When gums recede, the exposed root becomes sensitive and prone to decay. We place healthy tissue over the area to cover the root, reduce sensitivity, and restore a natural gumline. Bone Grafting — Periodontitis destroys the bone around teeth. Bone grafting rebuilds that foundation, which can save a loose tooth or prepare the jaw for a dental implant later. Pocket Reduction Surgery — Deep pockets around teeth are nearly impossible to clean at home. We gently fold back the gum tissue, remove the bacteria, and secure the gum at a healthier level so pockets stay shallow and manageable. Dental Implants and Periodontal Care — Before an implant is placed, we make sure the surrounding bone and gum tissue are healthy and strong. After placement, we monitor the area to prevent peri-implantitis and keep the implant stable for years. Crown Lengthening — When a tooth is broken below the gumline or needs a crown, we reshape the gum and bone to expose more of the tooth. This gives the restorative dentist enough solid structure to build a lasting restoration.

Signs You May Need Periodontal Care

Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are usually the first warning. You may also notice persistent bad breath, gums pulling away from teeth, or teeth that feel loose or shift when you bite. Some patients see pus between the teeth and gums, or feel pain when chewing. If any of this sounds familiar, it is worth having a periodontist in San Bernardino take a look before the damage becomes irreversible.

    How to Prevent Gum Disease

Brush along the gumline twice a day and floss every day. Plaque hardens into tartar within about twenty-four to seventy-two hours, and tartar can only be removed professionally. Come in for cleanings and gum measurements at least twice a year so we can catch recession and pocketing early. If you smoke, quitting is one of the most effective ways to protect your gums. Managing conditions like diabetes also lowers your risk significantly.
